| The objective of the Willow Springs Arts
Council is to stimulate the arts and provide arts programming for
persons in North Central Kansas. This is accomplished by planning
and executing programs which provide opportunity for local artists
to perform or exhibit their work and by bringing to the community
performers from other areas. The need for this function is
demonstrated by the very positive community response by both
performers and the audiences. Being a small rural community far from
any urban center makes access to many cultural events difficult.
A major project undertaking by the Arts Council in the
past few years has been the acquisition and restoration of the
former Union Pacific depot. The depot is being converted into a
small theater and although not completed it is now usable for
receptions, meetings, plays and entertainment. Funding for this
project was by donations and the work was done by volunteers.
The largest annual entertainment event produced each year
is the Beloit Chautauqua sponsored by the Willow Springs Arts
Council. The event provides a focal point for craft demonstrators,
entertainment and education for all of North Central Kansas. The
Chautauqua is conducted in Beloit Chautauqua Park through the
cooperation of the City of Beloit which gives the Arts Council
exclusive use of the park for the entire weekend. Large tents are
erected to provide shelter for audience and exhibitors. Things
included are music, drama, dance, speakers and children's
activities. |
